Ruhi Çenet's video reached millions before it was pulled from YouTube. Whatever the official reason, the effect is the same: one less place to see it. This page is one more — plain, permanent, easy to pass on.
What is happening
East Turkestan — the region China calls “Xinjiang” — is the homeland of the Uyghurs, a Turkic, mostly Muslim people.
Since 2017, an estimated one million or more Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims have been held in detention and “re-education” camps, according to UN-cited estimates and human-rights groups.
Survivors and researchers have documented mass surveillance, forced labour, family separation, and the suppression of language, faith and culture.
In 2022 the UN Human Rights Office found the abuses may amount to crimes against humanity. Several parliaments have gone further and called it genocide. China rejects these findings.
